Collage 101
In collage, you explore your relation to the world, small sparks of vision flaming up from one or two starting images. Collage frees your creativity from the requirement of an entire artistic vision. Inherently imperfect and improvisational, collage lets you do something physical and visionary today, with scraps you already have (I have plenty to choose from, too). Collage fits well into the global world of today and welcomes you into the long legacy of humankind. A collage you have made for a friend is the best gift: it is unique. It takes up very little space. And it shows that you trust them to receive from you. In this class, you will learn how to do the intertwined mental and physical operations of seeing, choosing, and relating; and cutting, placing, and gluing. Your instructor, Sarah, has been cutting paper for four decades, but she is still an amateur, just enough ahead of you to guide your learning. She believes that collage is about focusing, and trusting yourself. To create something that pleases you, you must find a process that pleases you each step of the way. C., who took the class, writes, “Sarah’s class was my first experience with collage art and with an open mind I let my subconscious out to play. As I arranged and rearranged, cut and tore, and with the help of Sarah’s insights, colors, shapes and a story emerged. It was both fun and cathartic for me.” All materials included, but bring an image or background if you have something you like! I'll send information about the place (Hillcrest) and whatnot after you've signed up.
