Imperfect Workshop: Owning Your Voice
In this 2-hour online workshop, we will practice speaking up, articulating your expert opinion, and presenting your recommendations in ways that are resonant and respectful to your audience. We will cover: • Owning your voice. You’re the expert! What do you recommend and why should I trust you? • Boundaries, Relevance, & Recommendations • Exercise + skill building re: how to advocate for yourself and your team respectfully • How do we make this real? We will practice: • Speaking up about your extensive expertise/qualifications (i.e. I’ve been called out/shamed for earning my doctorate; now I feel uncomfortable bringing it up.) • Speaking up without seeming to be irritated because I am the only person of color, or only person speaking on behalf of other marginalized communities • Speaking up in situations when there’s misalignment • Saying: This is my recommendation, and I’m comfortable it. I’m also comfortable if you decide to proceed in your own direction • Offering my perspective, without over-explaining • Offering a recommendation without expectations that others must/should follow my recommendation. • Sharing my opinion without coming across as “too direct" Who is this class for? • Social impact and nonprofit professionals • Emerging leaders ready to use their voice • Anyone waiting for the “perfect” moment to arise before they advocate for themselves This class is limited to six attendees. Confidentiality between attendees is required. Nothing will be recorded.
